Cycling in Switzerland
Cycling in Switzerland: four legendary Alpine passes from the Engadin valley, Verbier's savage training climbs, and WorldTour-grade roads built for the sport.
Cycling in Switzerland operates at a level of precision and quality that reflects the country's character: the roads are immaculately maintained, the mountain infrastructure is thoughtfully designed, and the combination of altitude, gradient, and Alpine scenery produces cycling experiences that are simply unavailable anywhere else in the world at equivalent road quality.
The Engadin valley around St. Moritz and Pontresina sits at 1,800m and provides the unique experience of base-elevation altitude training: before a pedal stroke is made toward any pass, the body is already working harder than at sea level. From this high plateau, four legendary passes radiate outward β the Albula, Julier, Bernina (the highest pass in the Eastern Alps at 2,328m, with active glaciers visible from the road), and the Maloja, whose Italian approach from Chiavenna through the dramatic Val Bregaglia is one of the great Alpine ascents. The classic Four Passes loop from St. Moritz covers 170km and 3,200m of climbing, entirely on Swiss-engineered roads with surfaces that would be considered exceptional elsewhere.
Verbier, in the Valais canton, functions differently β as an arena for structured suffering. The Croix de Coeur averages 10.1% over 10.4km and is used by Quick-Step, Bahrain Victorious, and Israel-Premier Tech as a threshold test during their spring training camps. The Col du Grand St-Bernard β at 2,469m, one of Europe's great Alpine passes with a hospice at the summit dating to the 11th century β is available as a full-day epic from the valley floor. The Col de la Forclaz provides views of the Eiger, MΓΆnch, and Jungfrau on clear days.
Cycling in Switzerland is a summer pursuit: the high passes open in mid-June and typically close in late September. July and August are most reliable, with June and September offering better solitude and the possibility of pass closures from late-season snow. The investment in a Swiss cycling holiday is repaid with road quality and Alpine scenery at a standard unmatched across European cycling.
